We all love travelling. Who is not fascinated by a chance to explore famous places, extraordinary monuments and prominent architecture? But have you ever thought about another way of digging into the local culture? This summer ditch sightseeing and go for a traditional food tour. Follow 5 tips to get the most of your local cuisine quest:
Visit local restaurants. One of the most certain ways to learn about a foreign cuisine is to visit small local restaurants where you can try out real local food cooked according to traditional recipes. The best place for your discoveries - small, family-run restaurants where you can get the taste of home – made food. The prices are usually reasonable here. Shy away from international franchise food chains, because you are unlikely to taste something authentic or characteristic to the local culture, you didn’t come abroad to eat in McDonald’s, did you?
Buy from local stores. Try to visit as much local stores and bazaars as you can, there you can buy precious local spices, naturally grown fruits, vegetables or fresh seafood and cook something on your own using traditional recipes. On your visit to lovely local shops not only you can do shopping, but also have some nice chats with locals (if you are familiar with local language or they speak English) and get in touch with culture closer.
· Enroll into cooking classes. Yes! If you have such possibility, do it! Not only culinary courses will get you familiar with a local cuisine, but also you will learn how to cook from a professional local chef and broaden your circles of friends. It’s a win-win!
Family dinner. If you have friends in the visited country and they have already invited you to a family dinner, don’t hesitate, get a bottle of good wine and get ready for local experience! You will immerse in a non-formal environment and taste some traditional food. Or you can bring your food form local stores or bazaars and suggest cooking it together!
· Be active! Seek possibilities to learn about cuisine during tourist activities which are offered in a country you are visiting. Maybe there is a trip to a small ancient city where you can chat with artisans and try their local cuisine, boat trip or trip to mountains where you can get to know a tradition of food of subculture living in the mountains? It’s even more fascinating!
